What is the primary benefit of this training?
Initially, we hear participants say they appreciate improving conflict, problem identification, and problem resolution. They also emphasize they are working much harder to listen more effectively.
After a time, we begin to hear about happiness and resilience. As they talk, they tend to bring up trust.
Then, after an even longer time, we hear about what they’re doing to have a good life—and what they’re doing to help others.
As such, the answer to this question is, “It depends.” In particular, it depends on when the question is asked relative to when they completed the training.
How much will I benefit from this training?
My dear friend, John Lilly, said it best: You get out of it what you put into it. I think it’s fair to say that he got quite a lot out of it—he certainly put a great deal of effort into it.
Research has shown as many as 95 separate benefits. Some benefit business, some improve health, and the rest—most of them—benefit each of us. Just learning to listen effectively, when almost all of us have a long history of being poor listeners, will generate substantial benefits to you. I’ve seen it. Managers who listen most effectively tend to be the best.
